The eighth and ninth phrases list two more apostles having these 6 narrator words, ... kai Thaddaion, kai Simōna ton Kananaion (and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, ...). The 6 words are top down. James (son of Alphaeus) and Simon the Cananaean are shown with green eyes to differentiate them from the two fishermen with the same first names, James Zebedee and Simon Stone who have blue eyes. The text has now named eleven disciples. The two green eyed apostles meld in with the others like extras in a play. They never say a word of dialog and they only appear by name in this one pericope. Their sole purpose is to bring the total number of disciples up to twelve with the creation of the last and most important disciple. These eleven disciples all come from Galilee. From now on they will all have brown eyes like Jesus when they appear together. 3:18b < Verse > 3:19 |
