Verse 3:14 contains 4 phrases having these 16 narrator words, ... kai epoiēsen dōdeka, ous kai apostolous ōnomasen, hina ōsin met autou, kai hina apostellē autous kērussein (And he-made twelve, whom also he-named apostles, so-that they-might-be with him, and that he-might-send them to-proclaim, ...). The 16 narrator words are top down. The 1st phrase "kai epoiēsen dōdeka" (And he-made twelve) and the first phrase of verse 16 (And he-made the twelve) form an "inclusio," a literary device to bracket the text in between to inform the reader of an important theme. The diagram implies Jesus will "make" the apostles by just saying their names which is what he does with their nicknames in verses 16b-18. The oldest documents lack this 4 word second phrase "ous kai apostolous ōnomasen" (whom also apostles he-named) which is why many bibles enclose it in brackets. This diagram shows it to be original, probably from a rediscovered earlier manuscript, then added later by scribes as a gloss or margin note. This surprising diagram needs all 16 words so that the twelve can proclaim from the bottom of the mountain. |
