The 9 narrator words are top down from where the maid departed, down to the two standing guards, then down to Simon the Stone. With the maid gone, the 9 narrator words compelled Simon to enter the courtyard to warm himself again. Now that Simon moved out of the forecourt, a new tenant could move in.
