The 3rd phrase has these 3 narrator words ... kai kolaphizein auton (and to be striking him, ...). The 3 narrator words are top down. If the chief priests joined in they would not dirty their hands by striking Jesus with their fists. Instead, they would have somebody else do it. The diagram shows Jesus being struck on his nose by one of the scribes whose 'open hand' strikes tangent to the words "kolaphizein auton" (to be striking, beating him) over the face of Jesus. The chief priests now come to supervise. Again, the hands of Jesus are virtually tangent to this "beating" covering his face! 14:65b < Verses > 14:65d |
