Verse 44 has 4 phrases and 18 words. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd phrases have these 8 narrator and 5 dialog words, ... dedōkei de o paradidous auton, sussēmon autois legōn, ... Hon an filēsō, autos estin [Had given now the-one betraying him a-fixed-sign to-them saying, "Whom ever I-friend-kiss, he is (the one) ..."]. Verse 44 is a flashback in time to shortly after Judas made his agreement with the chief priests (Mark 14:10-11). The 8 narrator words are bottom up tangent to Judas and the four guards. The 5 dialog words are also bottom up, tangent from the mouth of Judas to the triangle holding Jesus, to the chief priests, to the Temple guards (re kiss-sign). The last supper was the next story (Mark 14:12-25) and Jesus already knew that Judas would betray him. We can only conclude that after talking to the priests, the temple police were told how and when Judas would betray Jesus. The police would make sure Judas did not deviate from the plan and the mutually agreed sign (outlined in the 3 white triangles). The exact details were left to the imagination of the reader. The following gospels would fill in the details to answer what Mark left unsaid. 14:43c < Verses > 14:44b |
