Jn 1:19b ... And this is the Testimony of John, when the Jews out of Jerusalem sent to him Priests and Levites so that they might ask him, ... "Who are you?"

The 4 phrases contain these 21 narrator and 3 dialog words ... Kai autē estin hē marturia tou Iōannou, hote apesteilan pros auton hoi Ioudaioi eks Herosolumōn hiereis kai Leuitas hina erōtēsōsin auton, "Su tis ei" (And this is the Testimony of John, when sent to him the Jews out of Jerusalem, Priests and Levites so that they might ask him, "Who are you?").

The first 21 narrator words and the 3 dialog words are all top down. The Jews out of Jerusalem were probably sent by the 71 members of the Sanhedrin, or great court. The priests were from the Temple. The Levites belonged to the tribe of Levi and were scribes and elders, assistants to the chief priest's. The purpose of their mission was to see if John was the Messiah or a legitimate prophet.
