| 1:19 | And this is the Testimony of John, when the Jews out of Jerusalem sent Priests and Levites to him so that they might ask him, ... "Who are you?" |
| 1:20 | And he confessed and did not deny. And he confessed that, "I not am the Christ." |
| 1:21 | And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elias"? ... And he says, "I am not." |
| "Are you The Prophet"? ... And he answered, "No." | |
| 1:22 | Then they said to him, "Who are you?" |
| "So that we may give an answer to the ones having sent us." | |
| "What do you say about yourself?" | |
| 1:23 | He said, "I, a voice crying in the wilderness." |
| "Make straight the way of the Lord," as said Isaiah the Prophet. | |
| 1:24 | And the ones having been sent were of the Pharisees. |
| 1:25 | And they asked him, and said to him, ... "Why then do you baptize, ... |
| if you are not the Christ, nor Elias, nor the Prophet?" | |
| 1:26 | The John answered them saying, ... "I baptize in water." |
| "Among you has stood one whom you do not recognize, ..." | |
| 1:27 | "the One coming after me, of whom I am not worthy, ..." |
| "that I should loosen of him the thong of the sandal." | |
| 1:28 | These things happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan where John was baptizing. |
