The 4 narrator words are bottom up. The present passive text implies the Roman soldiers are pretending to greet Jesus before their actions turn sinister. They know they are here to begin killing their victim like a cat plays with a mouse before killing it. The diagram shows the soldiers have now crowned Jesus with their braided thorny wreath, (the excess braiding and thorns are back of the head). The soldiers get ready to give Jesus another sign of royalty.
