The second and third phrases have these 8 dialog words, ... ei de mē, aipei to plērōma ap autou ("if now not, will pull away the patch from it, ..."). The 8 words are bottom up. What follows is hypothetical based on the words "ei de" (if now), the patch is pulled away "now" creating a large tear. The 3 words "ei de mē" (if now not = otherwise) tells the reader there are two possibilities, either the patch is pulled away or not. The 5 words "aipei to plērōma ap autou" (will pull away the patch from it) is tangent to the patch and the top of the garment. The word "autou" (it) refers to the garment. When the patch is pulled away, a large tear appears in the old garment holding the words "ei de" (if now). The 8 words show where the signs need to be drawn so that the imagery of the text matches the hypothetical diagram. 2:21a < Verses > 2:21c |
