Repeating the 1st phrase again which has these 5 words ... Kai ontos autou en Bēthania (And of him being in a 'house of affliction,' ...). The 2nd and 3rd phrases have these 8 narrator words ... en tē oikia Simōnos tou leprou, katakeimenou autou (in the house of Simon the Leper, of down lying of him). Diagram 1: The first 5 words are bottom up, the next 8 words are top down. The Aramaic noun "Bethania" translates as "a house of affliction." Who is Simon the Leper? One of four different men named Simon in this gospel, and one of it's two lepers. If Simon currently had leprosy, he would be isolated, not allowed to live in a house and have guests. This is probably the same leper Jesus cured in chapter 1 and why Jesus is so familiar with him! Diagram 2: All 13 words are top down. The five 888 size words are tangent to the top of the door and the feet of Jesus who is lying down on a mat inside of Simon the leper's house. The last 2 words say "katakeimenou autou" (of down lying of him), meaning Simon is lying down "of Jesus." The diagram confirms Simon, the cured leper, is lying down of (below) Jesus and the house. 14:3a < Verses > 14:3c |
