The second phrase has these 4 narrator words ... Kai ēran perisseumata klasmatōn (And there was an abundance of fragments, ...).

The 4 narrator words are top down. The rectangle in diagram 8a holds 49 little fish. One can also see that one whole fish is made from 8 little pieces. A "basket" made from a regular hexagon tangent to the rectangle that represents the crowd holds exactly 294 little fragments of fish. The rectangle holds 392 little fragments. Therefore the hexagonal basket contains 36.75 little fish.
