Verse 24 is a reflexive statement of three phrases containing 14 words. The first two phrases have these 7 narrator words ... Euthus kraksas ho patēr tou paidiou [meta dakruōn] elegen (Immediately having cried out, the father of the child [with tears] was saying, ...) The 7 narrator words are top down. The word euthus (immediately) is the cue to use the previous diagram as a template. The 2 words "ho patēr" (the father) are exactly tangent to the father. The 2 words "tou paidiou" (of the child) are tangent to the Unclean Spirit that was holding the child is now holding the father. Some ancient manuscripts (probably Byzantine) have "with tears," others don't. If an ancient scribe had access to a manuscript with diagrams, he could have mistakenly added the two words "with tears" because the sign of tears is the same sign as believing. If the little boy immediately knew what his father said was not true maybe that's the reason he was crying. The wording, like the ancient manuscripts is ambiguous. The diagram shows there is no room for tears to be tangent to the father. 9:23 < Verses > 9:24b |
