Verse 12 has 5 phrases containing 23 words. The first 2 phrases have these 4 narrator and 6 dialog words, ... Ho de efē autois, ... "Elias men elthōn prōton apokathistanei panta" (And he said to them, ... "Elias indeed having come first restores everything, ..."). The 10 words are top down. The first 4 narrator words are tangent from the hands of Jesus to his dialog words to James and John. The four dialog words "Elias men elthōn prōton" (Elias indeed having come first) are tangent to the green triangles holding Elias and Simon and the white triangles coming down from Jesus. The last six dialog words are tangent to the four white equilateral triangles going up to Jesus and the four green triangles holding Elias, Simon, James, and John. The text alludes to the OT Malachi prophecy that Elias would return (as John the Baptist) to prepare the way for the Messiah, the Sun of Justice, Jesus. The euphamism "restores everything" (apokathistanei panta) seems to mean resurrection, restore back to life. This may be a prophesy referring to Elias being called in Chapter 15 when Jesus dies on the cross. 9:11b < Verse > 9:12b |
