Verse 48 has two sentences, four phrases, and 22 words. The first two phrases have these 3 narrator and 3 dialog words ... Legei autō Nathanaēl, ... "pothen me ginōskeis" (Says to him Nathanael, ... "How me do you know")? The 3 narrator and 3 dialog words are bottom up. Nathanael must have been surprised when Jesus said, ... "Look a true Israelite in whom guile is not." Nathanael knew Jacob took the name Israel and that he got it through guile. Nathanael probably realized that if Jesus said that, then he must be a better Israelite than Jacob! But he kept that thought to himself. But then how could Jesus blurt out his innermost secret thought as soon as he saw him! How could Jesus know this!! The next part of the verse is the answer Jesus gave to him. Jesus will tell him two impossible things he could never know unless he was actually there seeing what happened and also knew what he was thinking. Jn 1:47b < Verse > Jn 1:48b |
