Verse 47 has three phrases and 20 words. The first phrase contains these 8 narrator words, ... "eiden ho Iēsous ton Nathanaēl erxomenon pros auton" (Saw the Jesus the Nathanael coming before him ...). The 8 words are left to right, top down with the word "Jesus" on his chest. Nathanael decides to accept Philip's challenge to come and see. Nathanael has come all the way before Jesus. In the previous verse Nathanael said ... "Can anything good be out of Nazareth?" The diagram shows Jesus and Philip have both come out of Nazareth! And we know Jesus is good so Philip must also be good. This is one of the many ways the author of this gospel is showing his geometric guile. It also looks like Nathanael is climbing Jacob's Stairway to heaven made from Christ circles tangent to the fig tree. Geometrically, Nathanael is exactly where he needs to be so he can be just like Jacob from the Old Testament. Jn 1:46b < Verse > Jn 1:47b |
