The 3rd phrase has these 7 narrator words, ... ballontes klēron ep auta tis ti arē (casting a-lot upon them who what should-take). The 7 narrator words are bottom up from where the Centurion was standing to where the under-garments were divided to where the Centurion now sits over his winning Lot on the Tunic. Jesus had an outer tunic and some under-garments which were divided in the previous diagram. The noun "klēros" (a lot) means a "share of something," in this case the tunic was awarded by chance (a raffle). The pronoun "them" refers to the garments already divided to the soldiers plus the tunic awarded by casting 5 lots. The Gospel of John confirms this ... "Now the tunic was seamless, from the top woven through whole. They said therefore to one another, let us not split it but let us cast lots upon it of whose it will be, that the scripture might be fulfilled, the one saying, "they divided my clothes for themselves, and cast lots for my garment" {Ps 22:18}, therefore the soldiers did these things" (John 19:23b-24). 15:24b < Verse > 15:25a |
