Verse 21 has 4 phrases and 19 words. The 1st and 2nd phrases have these 9 narrator words ... Kai aggareuousin paragonta tina Simōna Kurēnaion erxomenon ap agrou (And they-compel passing-by a-certain Simon, a-Cyrenian coming from a-field, ...).

The 9 narrator words are bottom up. These two phrases only concern the soldiers and Simon the Cyrenian. Jesus is present but not mentioned, therefore not pictured. The location of this meeting is ambiguous. According to church tradition re the stations of the cross, Jesus collapsed while still inside the city. According to this gospel we should assume the Romans have just left the city on their way to Golgotha because a field would not likely be inside a walled city like Jerusalem.
