Mk 6:17a ... For the Herod himself having sent (a guard) arrested the John, ...

Verses 17-29 are a flashback to a time before the name of Jesus was becoming known and people were saying John was Elias or one of the prophets coming back from the dead. The coming flashback was before Herod was saying "John, whom I beheaded, has come back from the dead.

Verse 17 has 6 phrases and 24 narrator words. The 1st phrase has these 8 words ... Autos gar ho Hrōdēs aposteilas ekratēsen ton Iōannēn [Himself for the Herod having-sent (a guard) arrested the John, ...].

The 8 narrator words are top down. This part of the verse implies an unwritten accusative noun that is clarified later. The noun in this phrase is "a guard" that Herod sends off to "arrest" John, and later in verse 6:27 to take off his head.
