The third and fourth phrases have these 4 narrator and 7 dialog words, ... elegon tois mathētais autou, hoti meta tōn telōnōn kai hamartōlōn esthiei (were saying to the disciples of him, ... "That with tax collectors and sinners does he eat")? The 4 text and 7 dialog words are top down. Are the scribes asking the disciples to confirm if Jesus is really eating with them or is he only joining at table with them? The text seems purposely ambiguous. The diagram shows Jesus is not down eating. He is standing up, leading the ones lining the sides of the hexagon. According to what the next verse says and diagram 17a shows, Jesus hears the question. In order for the signs to line up, he can only do this standing up, leading, and ironically, fasting. 2:16b < Verses > 2:17a |
