Jn 1:33a ... "And I not did recognize him, ..."

33a11033a2

Verse 33 has six phrases and 32 dialog words. The first phrase contains these 4 dialog words, ... Kagō ouk ēdein auton ("And I not did recognize him, ...").

Diagram 1: The 4 words are top down. The word Kagō (And I) is tangent to John, auton (him) is tangent to Jesus. Since John was sent into the world by God the Father, he will quote Him in his testimony as to why he baptizes. The two empty circles coming from the sides of John's head shows he didn't immediately recognize Jesus standing below which is confirmed by his four word admission.

Diagram 2: Verse 32 had 4 narrative and 13 dialog words. The first phrase of verse 33 has 4 more dialog words for a total of 21 words. Jesus is completely enclosed by words and triangles which of course is why John can't recognize Jesus, because he can't even see him! Obviously, this was a good opportunity for the Gospel author to give John 4 words of humorous commentary on the appearance of the diagram.
