Mk 9:32b ... and they were afraid to ask him.

The second phrase has these 4 narrator words ... kai efobounto auton eperōtēsai (and they were afraid to ask him).

The 4 narrator words are bottom up, tangent to the empty circles coming from the mouths of Simon, James, and John, the sign of the words they were too afraid to say. Simon was too afraid to ask after Jesus severely rebuked him for questioning his first prediction of death (Mk 8:32-33).
