Verse 43 has two phrases containing these 6 narrator words, Kai embrimēsamenos autōi, euthus exebalen auton (And snorting in anger to him, immediately he out-cast him). The words autōi, auton (to him, him) are ambiguous. Do they refer to the dismembered "Unclean Spirit," the cured Leper, or Unclean Jesus? All three possibilities are true. The words "kai embrimēsamenos" (and snorting in anger) is tangent to the beard, mouth, and nose of Jesus. The last 4 words "autōi, euthus exebalen auton " (to him, immediately he out-cast him) are tangent to the chest, arms, and feet of Jesus to both halves of the Unclean Spirit down to the head of the cured leper. The verb exebalen (to cast out) is used for "casting out demons and exorcisisms" (Sacra Pagina, Mark, Donahue/Harrington). According to Mosaic law, illness was caused by Unclean Spirits and now Jesus can't enter any walled city for seven days. The diagram shows the Unclean Spirit and the cured leper quarantined behind a green wall. Jesus will also cast himself out which is later addressed in verse 45. 1:42 < Verses > 1:44a |
