Verse 19 contains 4 phrases, and 16 words. The 1st phrase contains these 9 narrator words, ... toutou de eipen sēmainōn poiō thanatō doksasei ton theon (And~this he-said signifying by-what-make of-death he-will-glorify the God). The 9 narrator words are bottom up. Verse 18 and 19 signifies a glorious death by crucifixion awaits Simon. This verse is a challenge by the narrator to use gematria to crucify Simon. The image of the Cross is confirmed by gematria in the next 3 phrases. The solution was obviously suppressed but it may have inspired the Church to "discover a story" about how Simon died. According to 2nd Century tradition, Simon was crucified upside down on the Appian Way in Rome on June 29, 64 AD. Eusebius wrote that Peter didn't consider himself worthy of being crucified the same way as Jesus (Eusebius, Eccles. History, 3). The verb "poiō" (by what make) is open to translation latitude, such as "by what way, manner, type, kind, choice, or by what geometry construction. Jn 21:18f < Verse > Jn 21:19b |
