Verse 32 has four phrases and 16 words. The first three phrases have these 4 dialog and 3 narrator words, ... alla eipōmen, eks anthrōpōn, efobounto ton oxlon ("But if we say, 'From men,'" ... they feared the crowd). The 7 words are top down. The 4 dialog words "alla eipōmen, eks anthrōpōn" (But if we say, From men) are tangent to the 6 temple authorities and the crowd of Jews they feared. The 3 narrator words "efobounto ton oxlon" (they feared the crowd) is also tangent to the crowd of Jews. If the temple authorities said the authority for John's baptism came from a crowd of people through John, they would be denying John was a prophet who's authority came from God. But if the crowd believed his authority did come from God, then the crowd might turn on them and stone them to death. 11:31b < Verses > 11:32b |
