The 4th phrase has these 8 narrator words ... ēsan gar hoi erchomenoi kai hoi hupagontes polloi (were for the-ones coming and the-ones under-leading many, ...).

The 8 narrator words are top down, left to right. The last 12 words of verse 31 are a quick flash back explaining why Jesus ordered his disciples to go to the wilderness to rest. The first 8 words are exactly tangent to the disciples and to the crowd Jesus will soon teach and feed. The word order for "ēsan" (were) was placed before the three words "gar hoi erchomenoi" (for the ones coming) so that the twelve disciples would have four appropriate words to balance the four words underleading the crowd, even though the word "ēsan" (were) translates better if placed below.
