The 5th phrase has these 6 dialog words ... Kai tois pneumasi tois akathartois epitassei ("And the Spirits the Unclean he commands"). The 6 words are bottom up. The 4 Jews were referring to what the possessed man said in verse 24. The 4 words "tois pneumasi tois akathartois" are tangent to "the Spirits the Unclean." The synagogue Jews only knew of one "unclean spirit," the one possessing the man. But that man said there were more. The "Unclean Spirit" twice said "us" rather than "I." Jesus did not contradict him. The word epitassei comes from epi (upon) and the verb tassei (to command) falls directly under Jesus who commands them. The Jews concluded if Jesus could make one Spirit obey him, he could make two or more of them listen and obey. Their conclusion will be confirmed in the very next story. 1:27c < Verses > 1:27e |
