Mk 1:22a ... And they-were-amazed upon the teaching of-him, ...

Verse 22 has 3 phrases and 18 narrator words. The first clause has these 6 words ... Kai ekseplēssonto epi tē didache autou (And they were amazed upon the teaching of him, ...).

The 6 narrator words are bottom up. The pronoun "they" refers to the Jewish congregation. This sentence compares the teaching of Jesus to that of the scribes. However, parsing the verse, we learn that the synagogue contains regular Jews that attend and scribes who act like Rabbis and teach. The scribes are fundamental, they teach the Old Testament as literal history. Jesus teaches that it prophesies his coming. The disciples will not be seen again until the next parable which begins in verse 29.
