The 2nd phrase contains these 9 narrator words ... skotos egeneto ef olēn tēn gēn, heōs hōras enatēs (dark it-became over whole the land, until hour a-ninth).

The 9 words are clockwise starting far right on the land. The first 6 words rise up "the whole land" until the 6th word is tangent to the 6th hour. The last 3 words drop down in darkness until the 9th word is tangent to the 9th hour. The gospel text uses an indefinite construction for the place and time which shows the passage of time for this action has still not concluded. The ninth Roman hour represents 3 PM on a modern clock face.
