Mk 10:38a ... Yet the Jesus said to them, ... "You do not know what you ask."

Verse 38 has three sentences, five phrases, and 23 words. The first sentence has two phrases containing these 5 narrator  and 4 dialog words ... Ho de Iēsous eipen autois, "Ouk oidate ti aiteisthe" (The yet Jesus said to them, "Not do you know what you ask.").

The 9 words are top down. The first phrase of 5 narrator words are tangent to Jesus and his glories. The 4 dialog words "Ouk oidate ti aiteisthe" ("you don't know what you ask") are tangent to the ears of John and James. Jesus has a kind way of refusing their request. He will ask them if they are prepared to do these two suicidal acts that he is about to do.
