Verse 22 has three phrases and 13 narrator words. The first two phrases have these 8 words ... Ho de stugnasas epi tō logō, apēlthen lupoumenos [He but became gloomy upon "the word." He left grieving, ...]. The 8 narrator words are bottom up tangent to the four previous words. The first 6 words "Ho de stugnasas epi tō logō" (He but became gloomy upon the word) are tangent to the 4 previous words "and come follow me." The 2 words apēlthen lupoumenos (he left grieving) are tangent to the first 6 gloomy words tangent to the face of the rich youth. The diagram shows the "eternal life" up in heaven he wanted so dearly. However giving away all he owned to the poor and in the process becoming poor himself for the rest of his life made him grieve at the thought of it. The expression "the word" has two components. The first component is what Jesus said "and come follow me." The second component is the single word "Life." The next diagram will explain why he left from Jesus feeling so gloomy. |
