Verse 20 has four phrases containing 23 narrator and 6 dialog words. The first phrase contains these 11 narrator words, ... Epistrafeis ho Petros blepei ton mathētēn hon ēgapa ho Iēsous akolouthounta (Having-turned 'the Stone' sees the disciple whom the Jesus was-loving following-them, ...). The 11 words are top down and counter-clockwise. Verses 21:18-19 concerned a prophecy Jesus made about how Simon must die. The parable now resumes with another prophecy about how the beloved disciple must live until the resurrected Jesus will return sometime in the future. This new parable now reacquaints the reader with the beloved disciple. The gospel text has ho Iēsous (the Jesus) in the nominative case (the subject of the sentence) which translates that Jesus "ēgapa" (was-loving) the disciple in the past. A quick flashback to illustrate their loving friendship follows. Jn 21:19b < Verse > Jn 21:20b |
