The 3rd phrase has these 4 narrator words ... kai epērōtōn auton legontes (and they were questioning him saying, ...).

The 4 narrator words are bottom up. The Sadducees did not believe in resurrection, life after death. In this gospel story, the Sadducees will pose a hypothetical skit to Jesus they believe will demonstrate the absurdity of the doctrine of raising the dead, but every word they say will disprove their argument!
