The third phrase has these 9 narrator words ... kai elthōn ep autēn auden euren ei mē fulla (And having come upon it, nothing he found if not leaves, ...). The 9 narrator words are top down. The text again uses the personal pronoun for "her" (meaning it, the fig tree). The intelligent reader now understands the author is personifying the fig tree as Israel, or equating it to their religion. The double negative "nothing he found if not leaves" means "he found only leaves." The meaning of the parable is that the Jewish religion was like a great show of leaves that bore no "fruit" (karpos 471). 11:13b < Verses > 11:13d |
