The 3rd phrase has these 5 narrator words, ... opsias ēdē ousēs tēs hōras (evening now being the hour, ...). The 5 narrator words are top down, tangent to "opse" (evening, 6 pm), the first hour of the night. The first watch of the night, are hours 1 to 3 (6 to 9 pm). The diagram shows darkness has descended 1/3rd of the way to the ground. By 9 pm darkness will have descended all the way.
