Cockcrow - alektorophonia

Definition: alektorophonia (al-ek-tor-of-o-nee'-ah) Noun, Feminine - Cockcrow, from alektor (a cock, or male of any bird, a rooster) and phone (a sound made by man or beast). The twelve hour Roman night watch division was adopted after Roman occupation began in 63 BC. A trumpet call, known as the cockcrow signaled the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th watch at 3 a.m.

Diagram: All live animals in Mark are metaphors for people or spirits. The sign of a Roman soldier sounding his trumpet (cockcrow) at the change of the guard at the third watch of the night, 3 a.m. Raising fowls (cocks or hens) was not permitted in Jerusalem (Baba Kamma 79b, 82b). Therefore, the sign of a "cockcrow" was a sound, not the call of a rooster, it was sound of a Roman soldier blowing his trumpet at 3 a.m.
