Verse 20 has two phrases containing these 9 narrator words ... Kai paraporeuomenoi prōi eidon tēn sukēn (And passing by at dawn they saw the fig tree withered from (the) roots). The 9 words are top down. The text says the time is "proi" (dawn). The sign for proi means helios (318), the sun (388) is just below the horizon. The curse Jesus put on the tree in verse 11:14a will now be fulfilled. Jesus is near the fig tree waiting for his disciples to join him. When the first two disciples arrive they see the canopy of the fig tree is dried out and dead because the sun withered it's roots. The same thing happened in the parable of the Sower when the sun scorched the root of the seed (Mk 4:6). This is the 22nd of 24 miracles Jesus performed in this gospel. |
