The 2nd phrase contains these 7 narrator words ... kai kērussōn baptisma metanoias eis afesin hamartiōn (and preaching a baptism of repentance into a forgiveness of sins). The 7 words words are top down. John's "preaching" is similar to Jesus' "teaching." The diagram shows John baptising (immersing) the heads of men in the Jordan river "two by two" so that the word "metanoias" (a change of mind, repentance) can brings about "afesin hamartiōn" (forgiveness of sins). Jesus will later tell the twelve disciples to go out "two by two" and teach repentance (Mark 6:7-13). Baptism is seen as a ritual (sacrament) where solemn words are recited, the head is immersed in water, and original sin is washed away. 1:4a < Verse > 1:5a |
