Arimathea - Arimathaia

Arimathea - Arimathaia

Definition: Arimathaia (ar-ee-math-ah'-ee-ah) Noun, Feminine - Arimathea, meaning "heights" which was derived from the Hebrew word ramah meaning "hill." Luke prefixes Arimathea with a rough breathing mark which means it should be pronounced "Harimathea." Joseph of Arimathea seems to be a play on words. In Greek, Joseph means "let him add;" in Hebrew it means "Jehovah has added." Using alliteration, the words arithmos meaning "number" and aroma meaning "spices" are embedded in Arimathaia. The village of Arimathea is not mentioned in the Old Testament or in any ancient texts. Other than the four gospels and this gematria explanation, there is no proof that it ever existed.
