Mk 5:4a ... "Many times" he was bound through "fetters" and chains ...

This verse is a flashback to a previous "time." The text adds two new signs: pollakis (often, many times), and pedé (fetter, a foot chain).

The diagram shows the demoniac was bound through by a "fetter and a chain" three "times." Counting down, this is the third time.

Mk 5:4b ... and the "chains" had been torn apart by him ...

This diagram is the second time.

Mk 5:4c ... and the "fetters" trodded together ...

The text says suntetriphthai, from sun (together) and tribos (a beaten track). This is a strange choice of words.

This diagram shows ... This is the first time.

Mk 5:4d ... and nobody was strong enough to tame him.

When the three "times" are over, "nobody" steps in, not to tame him but to...

Mk 5:03 < Verse > Mk 5:05
