The word Nazareth has a number of derivations. It can be seen as the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew netzer meaning a "shoot, sprout, or watch tower." It is also seen as the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew notserah, meaning "the guarded one." Geographically, Nazareth was the highest city in the province of Galilee.
